Music Workshops & Conferences

Mariachi Tenampa strongly supports music education programs. Throughout the past 15 years, we have participated in workshop instruction for many regional and international conferences in the Southwestern United States. Some of the conferences we have participated in are; Albuquerque Mariachi Spectacular, Santa Fe Fiesta Council Youth Mariachi Conference, Midland Texas Mariachi Conference, Alamosa Colorado Mariachi Conference, San Angelo Texas Mariachi Conference, Pueblo Colorado Mariachi Conference and St. Pius High School Music Workshops. Several members of Mariachi Tenampa also direct daily and weekly school mariachi programs at San Jose Elementary School, Washington Middle School, Albuquerque High School, the University of New Mexico, the Bernalillo Public School System and the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association's Mozart Y Mariachi Program. We feel that it is important to educate today’s youth about the important role that mariachi music plays in our culture and how they can properly interpret the music. We aim to keep the culture alive by passing it down from generation to generation by participating in these music workshops.

If your group or organization is interested in hosting a music conference or workshop classes and you would like to obtain information on how you may benefit from having Mariachi Tenampa organize your workshops, please read the general information given below. If you need additional information, please contact us and we will be glad to talk with you about your specific needs and requests.

Workshops Classes: Our music workshops are tailored to each organization's specific needs and are created for the musicianship level and instrumentation set up of each student group. Our normal workshop day would commence by giving a short half hour orientation and preview of the music to be taught. Following the orientation, all students are divided up and assigned to the specific classes they registered for, which are broken down by the instrument they play and their experience level.

Morning classes may last up to 2 hours followed by a 1 hour lunch break and finally a second 2 hour class in the afternoon.  After the instrument classes are over, we then gather for a large group rehearsal with all participants playing together in one given area.  Here we are able to review the music which was learned throughout that day.  This gives the students an opportunity to hear the songs complete with all other instruments and vocalists present. To conclude the day, an evening concert may be held in which all students and instructors perform the songs they learned for a live audience. Each participating group is also allowed to perform songs from their own repertoire before or after the combined student group performance.

Our normal workshops set up is broken down into two or three levels for optimal student to teacher ratios and group rate of progression. The criteria for each level is as follows:

  • Beginning level classes are for those students who have been playing their instrument for one year or less, for those who would like to develop their basic playing skills, or for those who are picking up their instrument for the very first time. The emphasis in this level is on basic instrument technique, playing form and the development of music reading and counting skills. The sheet music provided for this level is relatively simple and is written for students to play entirely, many times in lower octaves and with less complicated rhythmic patterns and chords.
  • Intermediate level classes are for those who already know the basics of playing their instrument and have normal music reading and counting skills. The emphasis in this level is on instrument technique, the development of reading and counting music as well as mariachi style phrasing and music interpretation. The sheet music provided for this level is written with more advanced parts which include complete rhythmic patterns, 2-4 harmony parts, more advanced chords and rhythms, higher range and positioning, and the addition of vocal chorus parts. This level is recommend for students who have already learned the basics as noted in the beginning level, but who may still wish to progress at a slower pace than that of the advanced level.
  • Advanced level classes are for those individuals who have been playing for several years and are proficient on their instruments. It is necessary that these students know how to read music and count rhythms at a more advanced level. In this level, many details are covered such as harmonization, chord structure and theory, mariachi style interpretation of the music, intonation, comparison of different types and style of mariachi music and the voicing of chorus leads. The sheet music provided for this level is written to normal professional standards and includes all parts written to each instrument's full capabilities. This class level is recommended only for students who have already gone through the lower level classes and can progress at a rapid yet steady pace.

Sheet Music: The sheet music we prepare is a vital part of our successful music workshops. All the sheet music we provide is computer generated and includes a director score, each individual instrument part and a vocal lyric sheet and/or lead sheet. Members of Mariachi Tenampa transcribe and arrange the music specifically for each conference and in many cases will transcribe songs selected by the groups (or their directors) which are attending the workshop classes. We take into consideration the level of the participants as well as the pace at which they can progress throughout the duration of the workshops within each class level.  We can provide these songs in any key for either a male or female vocalists.

Music Transcript Sales: Over the past few decades, all the sheet music we have written and taught at conferences has been cataloged and filed. If you wish to purchase any of the scores included in our music library as listed below, you may do so for the price of $45.00 per song. Each song will be completely written for a full mariachi ensemble and will include a director score, individual instrument parts and lyrics and/or lead sheets.
